We got up a little late this morning, had some breakfast and then left our mooring and retraced our steps back up the Wendover arm, we then turned right heading down the Grand Union and back to double locks.
We cruise over the Tring Summit Level this 3 mile summit is constantly being drained by the use of locks either end, and every time a boat crosses this summit it draws off nearly 200,000 gallons of water which needs to be pumped back up. We pulling into Cowroast marina to have a pump out, then we are back on our way and reach the outskirts of Berkhamsted.
Berkhamsted is a large town with buildings from all periods, the canal cuts right through the town, with a few pubs adjacent to the locks with punters sitting drinking in the afternoon sun, which when you operating locks make it very difficult to concentrate on the task. We don't stop in the town so no shandies today, but it looks a nice town, it has a Norman castle, where William 1 received the offer of the English crown in 1066, but the high street is dominated by the church of St Peter. It's also a town that thinks it is to posh for a Lidl store.
Famous people from this town include the novelist Graham Greene, the actor Michael Hordern, television presenters Esther Rantzen,Comic actor John Cleese, and the singer Sarah Brightman to mention a few.
We moored on the other side of the town , right next to a busy railway line, but its only for one night so we settle down again for the night.
