On to Weedon

Woke this morning to a bright but not sunny morning and straight into lock number three with it pub the Admiral Nelson looking over the lock, where we had a few shandies yesterday before the thunder storm camels st night, the next lock we buddy up with another boat,a family on a weeks holiday in a hire boat so the next couple of locks are quite easy and over within no time.

Next we enter Braunston tunnel which was opened in 1796 the tunnel is 2042 yds, its construction was hindered by quicksand and a mistake in direction has give it a slight S bend for us to negotiate. So off we set into the inky darkness with our bow light illuminating the way, this tunnel is designed so that two narrowboats can pass within the tunnel and we passed three boats as we proceeded through the tunnel.

At the end of the tunnel is Welton wharf with its village set on a steep hill the canal cuts through hills and wooded country next as we approach Norton Junction and we turn right here, and  the locks start again this time we buddy up with boat Scdixx and it owner Chris who we keep company for the next flight of locks, a total of seven, which we do with a bit of sweat.

We pass the village of Whilton which is one mile east of the canal at the end of a road that goes nowhere, and Brockhall with its shopping centre the Heart of the Shires Shopping village a collection of shops that sell amongst other thing architectural antiques .

The M1 motorway is never far from the canal as is the London to Midlands railway which gives us a reminder of the normal worlds set apart from the tranquilly peace of the canal, we now travel through Weedon with its aqueduct over the River Nene. We then carry on a little bit further and moor at Stowhill Wharf with its local pub the Narrowboat a lovely pub with a nice outside seating area overlooking the canal it also has a bed and breakfast facility, we sample a few shandies before going back to the boat for dinner and settling down for the night.

See you.....
