On and up the Thames

Awoke to a bright morning, we had breakfast and Denise also made a cup of tea for the men Bob and Steve who slept in their boat/ tent last night, we said our goodbyes and off we set, a lock greets straight away but is manned so its a breeze to go through.

We then pass under Swinford toll bridge which is one of the last toll bridges that is in private hands, the toll for a car is 5 pence, onwards with open farmland on our right, and a reservoir on our left which supplies Swindon with it water. The river starts to narrow and becomes quite windy, we then pass The Ferryman inn, where the ferry use to cross the Thames. Again we go through another pretty lock, before going under Newbridge bridge, with a pub on either side of it,in 1664 a civil war battle took place at this bridge.

We carry on twisting and turning up the river before we find a lovely mooring at Shifford lock, here Denise gives the inside of the boat a clean and I varnish the wooden rail on the stern of the boat.Whilst moored a man came by our boat and started pulling out fishing pots from the river, his catch was Crayfish which he told us were very nice when cooked the American Crayfish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_crayfish is a ferocious predator and has almost got rid of the British crayfish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austropotamobius_pallipes which has almost been wiped out in this country,.
